Covid19 Press Release

The Corona Virus pandemic has created unprecedented times globally, creating not only massive upheaval from an overall health and wellness perspective but also contributing to the never before seen historic drop in oil to minus figures. It has caused significant disruption to daily human lives, resulting in ‘lock down’ measures in Trinidad and Tobago as well as abroad, these measures that have stymied the ‘free movement’ of people have also had a debilitating effect on our economies globally and locally. Thus, leaving smaller economies with limited resources like ours, in jeopardy and perilously close to economic collapse, as cited by the Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Mottley in her interview with CNN on April 29, 2020.

This country, with its dwindling resources and falling revenues, are already going deeper into debt according to our Finance Minister, Mr. Colm Imbert. It is therefore an opportune time for our entire nation to unite across all lines that would have previously divided us to put the nation first to save us from economic collapse. Thus far, the government has worked in the best interest of all nationals by putting measures in place to assist the vulnerable as well as support the business community.

This crisis has revealed the importance of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and the critical role they play in our local economic engine. Therefore, it is of utmost importance going forward as one cohesive nation that greater emphasis must be placed on the following areas:

  1. The Focus must be placed on the support, growth, and development of MSME’s
  2. Consultation with all the business chambers to inform the National Development Plan
  3. Focus on scalability and capacity building initiatives to move more companies along the growth spectrum which will narrow the gap between very large businesses and very small business and eventually positively impacting our export capabilities
  4. More support for businesses that assist in reducing the food Import Bill
  5. As measured re-opening of the economy via restaurants with curbside pick-up options, delivery, and online ordering, maintenance of social distancing, maintenance of enhanced health requirements to enable micro and small enterprises e.g. vendors, etc to re-open, construction and other support industries as well.
  6. Construction sector agitation via gov’t capital injection into community and national projects
  7. Additional government support of companies with digital and technological objectives thus moving us to a more technologically advanced future national position
  8. A candid re-look at the agricultural sector with the aim of producing more food for local consumption as well as supporting systemic changes that allow for increases in fresh and value-added agricultural exports

The Chaguanas Chamber of Industry and Commerce is committed to our overall development as a nation and we look forward to working collaboratively with all stakeholders to create a stronger Trinidad and Tobago in the future.
